L’apertura nel marzo 2020 dei diversi archivi vaticani relativi al pontificato di Pio XII (1939-1958) ha suscitato l’interesse in tutto il mondo di studiosi di diverse discipline. Ha stimolato la tendenza a rivisitare la storia degli anni ’40 e ’50 al di là delle narrazioni e delle fonti consolidate, alimentando la speranza di affrontare questioni sia di lunga data che emergenti e di scoprire temi e approcci innovativi. Tre anni dopo l’apertura di questi archivi, un gruppo multidisciplinare di studiosi provenienti dal Belgio e dai Paesi Bassi si è riunito a Roma in occasione di una conferenza scientifica organizzata dai curatori di questo volume, per studiare l’impatto dell’accesso agli archivi su diversi ambiti di ricerca. Questa pubblicazione presenta nuove ricerche basate sulla documentazione rinvenuta negli archivi vaticani, che coprono sia la Seconda Guerra Mondiale che il dopoguerra, e sfida la ricerca esistente non solo sulla storia della Chiesa cattolica, ma anche su temi più ampi nei Paesi Bassi.
