This workshop aims to prepare a collective publication on the actors and practices of assistance to migrant populations in Europe and the Middle East between 1945 and 1970. The selected geographical scope—Europe and the Middle East as spaces of both emigration and immigration—seeks to bring into dialogue models and practices of assistance that circulated, were adapted, or contested across these regions. This comparative and transregional perspective allows for an examination of how aid mechanisms were reconfigured amid post-imperial transformations (including the end of colonial mandates in the Middle East) and Cold War dynamics.
Adopting a practice-oriented, ground-level approach, participants analyze how aid was produced through the daily interactions of diverse actors—international organizations, state administrations, religious institutions, diasporic networks, and other third-party intermediaries—whose cooperation, competition, and entanglements shaped migrants’ trajectories.
Moving beyond the well-studied macrostructures of migration governance, the project highlights understudied figures operating in the field of displacement assistance, as well as the migrants who engaged with these mechanisms. In doing so, it aligns with recent historiographical shifts that seek to decentralize institutional narratives and recover the voices and agency of assistance recipients.
